In the heart of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was essentially untarnished, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was essentially to care for his herd of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the breezes through the lone tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day after day, looking out for his charges imbued in here him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. On one such day because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plot.
Tales of wolves preying on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One day he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but found nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. Yet, one morning, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is difficult to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
